"Lb" looks nothing like "pound" because it abbreviates the Latin "libra pondo" — a pound by weight. The same Roman libra is why the British pound sterling uses the "£" symbol.

Frequently asked questions

How many centimetres is 5 feet 10 inches?

5 feet 10 inches is 177.8 centimetres. Each foot is exactly 30.48 centimetres and each inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, so 70 total inches × 2.54 = 177.8 cm. For 5 feet 9 inches the answer is 175.3 cm, and for 6 feet 0 inches it is 182.9 cm.

How do I convert pounds to kilograms?

Multiply pounds by 0.453592 to get kilograms — or roughly divide pounds by 2.2 for a quick mental estimate. So 150 lb is approximately 68 kg, 165 lb is 74.8 kg, and 200 lb is 90.7 kg. To convert kilograms back to pounds, multiply by 2.20462.

What is BMI and how is it calculated?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. The World Health Organization adult cutoffs are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal range, 25 to 29.9 overweight, 30 and above obese. BMI is a rough population-level screening tool — it does not account for muscle mass or body composition, so it is not a substitute for a clinical assessment.

How do I convert centimetres to feet and inches?

Divide centimetres by 2.54 to get total inches, then split into feet (whole number divided by 12) and remaining inches. For example, 175 cm ÷ 2.54 = 68.9 inches, which is 5 feet 8.9 inches (or roughly 5 feet 9 inches). 180 cm is approximately 5 feet 11 inches, and 165 cm is about 5 feet 5 inches.

Are stones still used for body weight?

Yes, in the United Kingdom and Ireland, stones are still commonly used for personal weight in everyday speech and on bathroom scales. One stone is exactly 14 pounds or 6.35 kilograms. So 12 stone is 76.2 kg, and 10 stone 7 lb is 66.7 kg. The stone is not used in the United States or in scientific contexts.

Why does my weight measurement differ from kg to lbs?

It does not — kg and lb are exactly proportional (1 kg = 2.20462 lb). Apparent differences usually come from rounding (some scales display kg to one decimal and lb to the nearest whole pound) or from comparing two readings taken at different times of day with different hydration, food, and clothing. The conversion itself is exact.
